LIVER CANCER
What is liver cancer?
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver (commonly referred to as "liver cancer") which can develop in patients that have cirrhosis and/or chronic liver disease.
HCC starts in the main type of liver cells called hepatocellular cells, most common as a result of infection with HBV/HCV or inflammation to liver cells (can be from cirrhosis or due to lifestyle).

Why is monitoring important?
Monitoring/Surveillance ----> Early Detection/Changes ----> Early Treatment Options ----> Treatment may be curative
LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND/OR CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE CAN DEVELOP INTO HCC. FOR THIS REASON, PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE OR CIRRHOSIS NEED REGULAR HEALTH CHECKS.
If you have chronic liver disease or cirrhosis you will need to visit your GP every 6-12 months, depending on your doctor’s advice. Your GP will request blood tests and ultrasound, in some cases CT or MRI may be required for further investigation.

What happens if there is a change found during your health check?
If your GP/Nurse finds there are abnormal changes to your blood test result and/or ultrasound, they will:
* The Liver MDT is a multidisciplinary team of health professionals which includes a clinical nurse consultant, hepatologist, oncologist, surgeons, radiologist, interventional radiologist, clinical psychologist and dietitian.
