The HOTTer West Program
The program addresses the rising incidence of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) due to increasing prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in Australia. Alarmingly, HCC is now in the top 10 causes of cancer death. More than half of the people affected in NSW are migrants born in countries where hepatitis B infection is endemic – pockets of Western Sydney are of particular risk. And progression to HCC is almost completely preventable if management strategies are successfully implemented.

The HOTTer-West program spans all stages of the Cancer Institute NSW’s model of Research Translation:
T1New epidemiological insights will be generated into the link between viral hepatitis and HCC in Western Sydney in comparison with the rest of NSW. This will include incidence, survival and the impact of improving antiviral therapy uptake.
|
T2A new shared care model will be tested and implemented in Western Sydney. This will involve supporting local GP practices, improving specialist-primary care interactions, implementing a new HCC MDT and raising community awareness. The shared care plan will focus on viral hepatitis detection and management, HCC screening and treatment and testing program efficacy and effectiveness.
|
T3System-wide change will be promoted through the dissemination of the HOTTer-West program outcomes. A report will be prepared by the investigators with focus on the monitoring and evaluation of the new shared care model and a list of recommendations informing proposed standards of care when implementing programs elsewhere, especially culturally appropriate management strategies for high risk communities.

National Hepatitis B Strategy (2014 - 2017)
Australia is still in the early stages of establishing a strong response to hepatitis B. This Second National Hepatitis B Strategy 2014–2017 (the Strategy) looks to build on the achievements of the first strategy, strengthening Australia’s hepatitis B response.
Hepatitis B Mapping Project
The Hepatitis B Mapping Project is a joint initiative of ASHM and the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL). The project aims to produce a comprehensive understanding of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in Australia using data to geographically map both disease burden and estimates of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) diagnosis, monitoring and treatment uptake. This will help to prioritise and evaluate health interventions, improve local service delivery and address the needs of local priority populations.
